Ruby is confronted with every woman’s nightmare of premature labour, giving birth at five months into pregnancy and witnessing her baby die in her home. The trauma is heightened by the experiences Ruby faced through her pregnancy as a Black woman, navigating underlying racism within the health system. Ruby’s white partner, Will, supports her, but does not comprehend the biased treatment she receives pre and post birth.
22+1 is a powerful and intimate portrait of pregnancy loss and the lived experiences of Black women within the maternal health system. Directed by Pippa Bennett-Warner and based on an original concept by writer and producer Pippa Vosper, the film draws on real testimonies and lived experiences to illuminate the racial disparities that continue to shape maternity care today.
The short made its world premiere at the London Film Festival 2025 and was selected for the Norwich Film Festival’s Official Programme.
22+1 is produced by Pippa Vosper and Gregg Wilson, with executive producers Charles Sekwalor, Babatunde Soyoye, Pippa Bennett-Warner, Pippa Vosper, Nils Andén, Anthony Noguera, Steve O’Pray, Jason Lee and Sophie Wilson.
